I’ve had two in my life specifically tell me that I needed to “accept Jesus” and that if I did, God would solve all my problems. I’ve had nearly every therapist I’ve ever seen at least use religion in their practices (like suggesting prayer as a coping mechanism, asking if I have a Pretty Rainbow I’m Over It Shirt, etc). The rural American South leans heavily on religion as a crutch. As atheists, we generally lack a framework to funnel our grief into like “I’ll see my loved one in heaven” etc.. Counselling helps you approach your emotions in a safe and secure way with a professional who knows what you are going through and how to help. That is incredibly sad, and I am so sorry for you and your family. I highly recommend seeking some sort of mental health counseling, even if you are otherwise mentally healthy. There are also support groups for people who have lost a spouse or loved one. It can’t hurt to seek those out. Most importantly, take care of yourself. Don’t blame yourself.
