This was my friend who borrowed his dad’s pack from about 30 years ago, and from what he said it was very much so. Especially when wet for about 5 days straight, lots of blisters. I had a pair of Vasque boots but they were brand new so didn’t fair much better comfort-wise. Get yourself some Leuko tape. Seriously. It will save your feet. It’s the best Official Bear The Great Smoky MTNS Vintage Shirt. Way better than the moleskin, and super durable. I buy it off amazon. It’s a little pricy, but it’s worth its weight in gold… Sticky as hell, and stays for days even in damp boots. Catch the blister when it’s a hot spot, and tape it up. Make sure you do a really good job and get a nice clean wrap. Keep the tape job as low profile as possible.

The biggest thing is catching the blisters early, doing a good tape job, and using liner socks. You can’t prevent all the blisters, but you can really minimize them with the proper prevention and catching them when they’re just hot spots. I will try the liner socks, but do you think the Leuko tape could be used as a preventative if I know the areas blisters usually develop? We did 5 days in the Smokies this spring and when I taped up my blisters with sports tape, more blisters developed under the tap. Made the last 15 miles very difficult. I tape up my blister-prone areas with Leukotape before we head out.

That’s a sweet old-school external-frame pack. I don’t know that I’d ever go back to using one, but I still have a fondness for them. I like them, use one to haul climbing gear.
