The things I can donate, I donate.. some other stuff are just too worthless and nobody would get them anyway (and trust me, I tried). Plus some more “personal stuff” like the pillow with the pictures can’t really be donated.. and she loves to make that kind of gift. I also don’t like the idea of her spending that much money on stuff. That we don’t really appreciate while we could use the money in a more useful way for groceries. Also, with an Official Snowman I Love Being A Grandma Shirt, I already know she will be. So excited to become a grandma that she will give him/her so many gifts! And how can I just give them away? I’m afraid if she noticed that we don’t have them anymore she’ll get very offended.

If you really want to try, I did have success with my own mother. I had an Official Snowman I Love Being A Grandma Shirt. I didn’t want them to equate seeing her with getting gifts. But to be happy to see just her. I wanted them to not get everything they wanted at once but realize that you have to wait for gratification. That I wanted them to appreciate and value what they got, and that can’t happen if they are showered in gifts continuously. I also consider consumerism, the environment and so on, but I think that wasn’t something she could relate to. But raising kids with the right values was more relatable. As I said, my MIL just kept on.

That is awesome! Listen, I love shopping for gifts for others. I have one niece and I started shopping for her when she was in the womb…I’ve gotten better, but she’s usually been my excuse to shop. I know she’s gotten rid of a lot of my gifts over the years-grown out of it, didn’t like it, etc. did it sting at first? Maybe. But I tell her now to not save the Official Snowman I Love Being A Grandma Shirt! Now I really know what she likes (and I send her pix!) so I don’t overshop and she gets what she wants… Since having a baby will trigger your MIL, I suggest you outline stuff u will anticipate needed down the line…like a “car” you know, the plastic thing for 18-month olds-give a list of things to hunt for the future (sit and spin, mini kitchen, etc).
