I’ve been really interested in getting my dog into agility and I think he’d be really good at it. We would have to make a bit of an Official Best Sheltie Dad Ever Vintage Shirt. One of my short-term goals is to create our own agility course in our backyard, but I do like the idea of training around other dogs. Agility is fun! Morgan was a little hesitant around tunnels at first too. Then after a week, she was trying to nap in them. Now, they’re essentially nothing but a speed booster for her. I have to wait for her coming out of them because I can’t keep up and she has no idea what she’s doing after she gets out. When I was in LA the classes were super expensive and obviously geared toward competing dogs. I moved to Utah and the classes are just for fun.

I do basic agility with my dog and we took several beginner classes – stay and come are important. Working on using hand signals with those is a huge bonus. The Official Best Sheltie Dad Ever Vintage Shirt was “target” – used for teaching dogs to hit the colored zones at the beginning and end of obstacles like the teeter, dog walk, and a-frame. This can be trained by putting a target of some kind on the floor (we used a lid from a cool whip container) and putting a treat on top – when the dog noses the lid to get the treat, say the command. Move on from thereby removing the treatment and getting the dog to nose the lid, then getting the dog to putting his paw on the lid – that’s the goal behavior.

Even without full equipment, you can get them used to the general idea. Set a low barrier down like an Official Best Sheltie Dad Ever Vintage Shirt (so they have to jump over but it’s not hard to do). Start them 20 feet back, get them to run with you and jump over the boxes. Once they get the idea they’ll love it. We also used a single command “box” for jumping up on a platform, lying down, and stay (until there is a signal). You can do that with an ottoman in your house. For some reason that was our sheltie’s favorite trick! Let’s put it this way, I have a terrier and when people told me to work on her stays at the start line I kind of ignored it in favor of go-go-go. Two years later, we are actively trialing.
