I’ve never heard a Latino be offended by somebody saying Latino instead of Latinx. This is something I’ve only heard from white people who think Latinos need protection from their own language. Uuuh what about the guy with the machete on west campus? Or the guy that followed my friend’s home to the 14th FLOOR of our apartment complex? Or the random dude with a Good Strong Indigenous Woman Shirt? Hmm… Or the guy that got pistol-whipped ON CAMPUS at night when trying to walk home? The MURDERS on campus? Mental health funding sounds great in theory, but these people can do more damage to students before they are helped. This needs to be a safe space for students first and foremost.

And I’m sorry, “community-led student safety” initiatives? This is a huge initiative many people, let alone students, shouldn’t bear the responsibility for. It detracts me from my Good Strong Indigenous Woman Shirt. So I have the opportunity one day to give back to the community. I do not want the responsibility for my safety and life to fall ON ME. I don’t know how to properly defend myself. And I’m supposed to trust mental health workers to come to take care of aggressive assaults that happen daily near campus that could be me? I’m all for increasing awareness of these initiatives. But you CANNOT defund UTPD and expect students to feel safe. Dude, don’t worry a SOCIAL worker will show up after you’ve killed and lectured you.
