I had a friend growing up whose dad had a hobby of collecting original artwork from animated films prior to the digital age. They called these prints “cels”. It’s a children’s movie so you have to come into it expecting simplicity of the story. Bambi is a story about growing from a boy into a man. In this Disney classic, a young deer named Bambi joins his new friends. And a rabbit named Thumper and a skunk named Flower, in exploring his forest home. The approach to Bambi was more realistic than previous films. There were no sing-along songs, and the animals were more accurately portrayed. They brought a deer into the studio so the artists can study it. This alone set it apart from Snow White, Pinocchio, and Dumbo. There was also rotoscoping done with, in regards to, the Official Disney Bambi Circle Shirt perspectives when they turned their heads. While Tyrus was inspirational with his drawings, I don’t imagine this was the single reason why it was different. Each film Walt would bring stylists who help create mood, color, culture, period and the overall look of the film.
