I read Walden in grad school for a class. My prof did dutifully point out that Thoreau didn’t isolate himself as fully as one might assume from just reading the book. But we did then go on to have a pretty solid and interesting discussion about the Remember I Taught You Everything You Know But Not Everything I Know Shirt. In college, I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful professor who really helped me see the true value in the work. Even still, I got the most out of it when I began to seek out more nature and simplicity in my life. I think like most literature, you get out of it what you put in, this holds true even when you have other people attempting to guide you through a given work with a Remember I Taught You Everything You Know But Not Everything I Know Shirt… It’s not some kind of personal challenge, I don’t sleep on a log or eat chipmunks, but for a few days I completely reset, I reconnect with nature, and I remind myself of what a day of relaxation really feels like…and what a day of actual real work really feels like.

Portaging my canoe a few kilometers, gathering firewood, filling up pots, and water sacks from the middle of the lake. I need to do that at least once a year or I go crazy. Sometimes I’ll find myself just starting a tiny little campfire in my backyard using various twigs and junk I cleaned up. I close my eyes, smell the smoke a little bit, hear the crackling, and everything just kind of melts away. I totally agree with the Remember I Taught You Everything You Know But Not Everything I Know Shirt. His philosophy is great, the way he goes about it is terrible, IMO. As a woman, it is hard for me to read Thoreau preaching simplicity when his mother did his laundry. Thoreau’s way of life wouldn’t have been possible for me at that time because of my role in society.
