I’ve always been most terrified by Leatherface, but not necessarily. Because of Leatherface himself, but because of the entire Sawyer family. Came to say this. Leatherface is beyond terrifying if you put yourself in the shoes of the protagonists, especially in the first one. The quality of the original TCSM almost looks like home video footage. Saws you apart with a chainsaw, and then makes decorations out of your body parts, and masks out of your face. Plus he has his whole cannibal family, including the creepy grandpa. Grandpa Sawyer was disgusting.

TBH as a younger person who only got into the old school slashers in the last three or four years and didn’t have any nostalgia for the films and baddies, Leatherface and the original TCSM hold up the best out of all of them and would still be considered scary if that movie came out today. I felt TCSM sets the scene so well with that hitchhiker/abandoned house sequence. And then woohoo boys that first kill is just so scary. The family dinner scene with the old man sells the Premium Michael Myers I’m Nicer Than My Face Looks Shirt. And then man what an ending. Particularly the first and second Friday the 13th is quite dated by today’s standards and had very little scare/shock value, at least IMO.
