UTA Alumni here worked during my college years but still had fun participating in the many events the school offered. I think many people commute and don’t have time to attend events. I worked full time and went to school part-time. I believe many people do as well, so they don’t get to experience the so-called, “college life”. I personally enjoyed it. The main problem is that despite what is claimed, UTA is a commuter school. Less than 15% of students live on or near campus. Many groups just stick to themselves doing their own thing instead of blending together.

That would probably damage our reputation as a very cost-friendly school. After my scholarship, I only pay my housing and meal plan which is very costly. Requiring the meal plan is ludicrous and I’d save a lot of money if it wasn’t required. I’m currently a senior in high school and have the option to attend UTA next year. As of now, it’s my first option… but I’ve heard all the backlash said about UTA, how there’s no nightlife, how the campus is dead after a certain time since everyone commutes, and the just the supposedly lack of social activities. Personally I don’t feel influenced negatively by all the criticism.

What people say is mostly true with some slight exaggeration because lots of students (myself included) are a bit jealous of their friends at UT, Tech, A&M, OU, UNT, etc where the social scene is lively. There’s no go-to bar that’s a little bit shady, house parties and house shows seem to be non-existent, etc. For lots, this doesn’t matter at all. And if that’s you then you’ll love it if you do care to visit some other places. Ask around and find what’s best for you. Although I’m a bit disappointed in the social scene I still don’t regret coming here and there are few universities I’d rather go to. Everyone experiences are different at UTA.
