Some teachers despised me for this Grateful Elephant Raised Right Shirt. They would constantly give me shit and make a fuss about me not doing homework. Even when I told them I wasn’t going to and I would still learn everything they wanted to teach me. So I’d just give them the bare minimum and read through their classes. From my perspective, some teachers just want that little bit of power they have. And see homework as a way of enforcing that control. Most teachers though truly just want their students to learn as effectively as possible and are willing to work with individual students as best they can to enable that.

I have a story about the Grateful Elephant Raised Right Shirt. I took graphic arts for a few years in HS (the velum and darkroom sort) and even though he knew the analog methods he was teaching were on there way out, there were skills that were useful elsewhere in life. It’s partly because of him that I learned Photoshop which became part of my career path. But the one skill I remember from his class was lettering for any sort of drafted plans. He was super stringent about out sizing and spacing and for a bonus, speed. I remember working on it till my hand ached, but to this day I get people at offices comment about how legible my printing is on forms, I write normal speed but I’ve been told it looks like a font.
