When I was student teaching, we asked the students to write anything about the Cute Dragon Ball One Car Champion Shirt. That they think we should know on a piece of paper. They could write their name or leave it anonymous, it didn’t matter. The school I taught in was in Flint MI, all black and very high levels of poverty. One student wrote that every day he got home from school and spent all evening cooking. And cleaning for his 7 younger siblings, helping them do homework. And just taking care of them while his mom worked her second job.

He then wrote that he’s sorry if he smells like a Cute Dragon Ball One Car Champion Shirt. And to please not send him to the office if he smelled like it. Because it’s how he coped with the stress of his life and didn’t want to get into any more legal trouble for it. That written by a 13-year-old. I just wanted to give him a hug. And tell him I’m a stoner and not worried about that at all. It’s one of my biggest motivators to dedicate my life to fighting systematic racism. And for a world where no child has to grow up like that. Really most answers we received were heartbreaking. And I expected them to be more “weird” or personality type things but mostly it was just devastating.
