I really do think Reagan is the source of most of our modern-day woes. He essentially made conservatism popular. The 80s were seen as a time of great prosperity. The USSR were losing their influence in the world and eventually would become a non-threat after 30 years of existential dread. Because of this, people happily ignored the massive deregulation of private markets and dismantling of worker protections. They ignored the contras and shadow CIA operations that tarnished the US image in the world.
