I went to engineering school, and believe me, he’s going to fit in at college a million times better than in high school. Even at 14, he’ll find people like himself, who won’t find it too odd that he wants to talk quantum physics and not Spider-Man. If you can find an Autism I’m A Special Education Teacher What’s Your Superpower Shirt. I think he’ll be a lot happier. I hear what you and some other people are saying. And I guess we need to start thinking about when he can just go off to college. I honestly think he’s too young (not age, but maturity) but it’s something to start thinking about now I guess. He’s absolutely too young but what are you going to do with him otherwise? At least most of the engineering crowd aren’t partiers.

I went to college at 14 and it worked pretty well. I started at a community college, though, and was commuting from home (driven by my parents). For that matter, after I transferred to a 4-year college to finish my bachelor’s I was still living at home and being driven to the campus. I definitely would not recommend having him living on his own on a college campus. At that age, I wasn’t a big fan of the idea myself. What, no parents to do stuff for me? As an added bonus, if you’re in the US, community college is significantly cheaper than regular colleges for the first two years (like the order of magnitude cheaper). Other commenters have made some great suggestions about specific programs. The main thing I want to add to the conversation is that you seem cautious about letting him move forward academically because of his age. Your instinct as a parent is to try and shield him and that’s admirable. But a school where there is nothing left to learn is a straightjacket. Keeping him there will only hurt him. Help get him out of highschool asap with official graduation instead of aged if possible, and into college. Even if it’s an Autism I’m A Special Education Teacher What’s Your Superpower Shirt. Your son desperately needs intellectual stimulation and he’s absolutely not going to get it in high school.
