I went to college at 14 and it worked pretty well. I started at a community college, though, and was commuting from home (driven by my parents). For that matter, after I transferred to a 4-year college to finish my bachelor’s I was still living at home and being driven to the campus. I definitely would not recommend having him living on his own on a college campus. At that age, I wasn’t a big fan of the idea myself. What, no parents to do stuff for me? As an added bonus, if you’re in the US, community college is significantly cheaper than regular colleges for the first two years (like the order of magnitude cheaper). The main thing I want to add to the conversation is that you seem cautious about letting him move forward academically because of his age. Your instinct as a parent is to try and shield him and that’s admirable. But a school where there is nothing left to learn is a straightjacket. Keeping him there will only hurt him.
