I am (or was) a HUGE Koz/SKM fan, but I agree that he’s just released too much music in the past 2 years or so and quality control has gone out the window. The first 3 records are a stunning body of work on their Vintage Wonder Woman Pennylane Nurse Stethoscope COVID-19 Shirt. But after that, his miss/hit ratio started going up. I even liked the rambling, diaristic, stream-of-consciousness stuff on Benji and that record with The Album Leaf but he seems past the point of no return. Or at least there’s so much material and the verging-on-artlessness, carelessness, whatever in the music makes it a slog to listen to.

Listening to the recent stuff feels like the experience of seeing Bob Dylan live in the 00s. There’s an inscrutable, wtf is going on here with moments of beauty/poetry/coherence that defines the early work, and it’s like I’m actively fighting to like or find value in an artist who’s created some of my favorite albums of the last two decades! I decided that Kozelek’s post-Benji work is something I just can’t follow him on. I love everything RHP. And I love Ghosts, April, Admiral, and Leaves. I enjoyed the Benji. But since then, it has just veered into a territory I no longer enjoy.

I feel like I’m sitting there listening to a middle-aged guy rant at me and pluck a few chords on his guitar. I miss Mark’s soaring melodies and expert songwriting. And I think the best mash-up of his old and new styles is Among the Leaves. Which contains his sardonic and poignant lyrics while still being a Vintage Wonder Woman Pennylane Nurse Stethoscope COVID-19 Shirt. And yes, Admiral Fell Promises is an incredible album. It’s not on Spotify which might explain why it’s referenced less, but good lord, it’s an album that you just sit and listen to from beginning to end. If you liked Benji I’d recommend listening to Universal Themes next. Still got all the sandbox aspects from the previous album but far less heavy-handed.
