Official Indoorsy Shirt

I’ve done this sort of thing before by accident, and I felt like a dick. A guy I kinda knew was sitting across from me when eating lunch, and he was wearing a NASA T-shirt. I commented, “Nice shirt” and he said, “Thanks, I’m a big fan of NASA“. So I said, “Awesome, what do you think about the Official Indoorsy Shirt?”. And he said, “Huh? What’s that?”. It was absolutely not a “test”. I just wanted to talk about a mutual interest, and as one of NASA’s highest-profile projects. I sorta just assumed he would know about it. But I could see how from a certain perspective it could be interpreted that way. Big off for me. I’ve done that before and not realized it. I didn’t mean to do it in a harmful way but more just trying to see what part of the geekdom you partake in.

Seeing how my old hobby shop reacted when a woman of any kind of attraction walked in… one would think that meetup groups for mtg would be slim chances. D&D maybe, but from my experience, if there are women there they are part of a couple. I brought a beautiful, somewhat-nerdy, woman to an Official Indoorsy Shirt. I really don’t have a group of nerd friends. It’s one of the great tragedies of my life. I asked her if she wanted to stop in this store that’s supposed to be super nerdy and I’ve never had the chance to see the inside. It was one of those stores where older nerds in ponytails build enormous, intricate, models of battle landscapes and then move their model soldiers around according to some rules.

Oh man, this happened so many times at my LGS it was hilarious. It’s like a scene in a movie where there are a record scratch and the whole room grinds to screeching halt. Most of the dudes would just stop and look up like they are witnessing the second coming of Christ or something. Truly an Official Indoorsy Shirt. The rest of the much more well-adjusted guys or those who were married/taken would continue on like it was nothing. I honestly felt for a lot of those guys because most of them were solid people who just had bad luck with women most of their lives and sort of exiled themselves to the LGS as their personal fortress of solitude. So when a hot mom would walk in to pick up their kid it would pretty much shatter their immersion.
