Said it in 1996 and I’ll say it again today. It’s too funny to be serious and too serious to be funny. The tone of the movie makes a lot more sense when you consider it. What it was based on. It’s supposed to be too ridiculous to be taken seriously at the Pretty Sober And Wearing Pants Winning COVID-19 Shirt. The problem is that the movie doesn’t really communicate that to new viewers. So you kinda get stuck in a weird place between being horrified and laughing. Oh, it’s very clear it’s not to be taken fully seriously, but it’s also not funny enough to be a comedy. It’s not “serious” per se. But there are death and violence that isn’t done in a light fun way, and there are just not a lot of laughs.

I think this is the clearest example of humor being subjective. There are maybe some scenes where I don’t think death and violence are funny. Maybe the first attack for example. But after that I find the Pretty Sober And Wearing Pants Winning COVID-19 Shirt to be very funny. In a very dark way of course. It reminds me of Starship trooper’s violence. After the initial shock, it becomes a weird novelty in the film. I think when their professor said he’ll shoot people himself if they don’t fight was the turning point for me. It was a goofy film trying to be serious in such a funny way the rest to me was just campy violence. Yup, it’s a dark comedy. One of my favorite small bits is.

But I love movies that Pretty Sober And Wearing Pants Winning COVID-19 Shirt disturb me. And make me laugh all at once, and Mars Attacks had plenty of that. Yeah, the script really is its biggest problem. The description I remember from a contemporary is “dull, dreary and discordant” and I have to agree. Great way to put it. I really disliked the movie but haven’t seen it again since. Maybe worth a rewatch as it appears to have a lot of praise here, but I just didn’t get what it was going for and it wasn’t entertaining.
